Mecum puts on sale an extremely rare Porsche 550A Spyder

Mecum auction house is about to put on sale an extremely rare classic car at the Monterey auction. The 1958 Porsche 550A Spyder won 3 titles shortly after leaving Porsche factory and it is one of 39 race cars built by Porsche.

Porsche 550A Spyder: a rare and mythical vehicle

After being delivered to Salzburg, Austria in 1958, the Porsche 550A Spyder enjoyed its heyday right out of the factory. Ernst Vogel won all three of his victories in the first year at his wheel. The vehicle was also used for a top speed attempt on the Salzburg highway and Vogel managed to push the vehicle at an average speed of 135.27 mph over one kilometre.

When Vogel left the wheel of the 550A Spyder, it was shipped to a Porsche dealer in Connecticut. It then changed hands a few times before being restored from 1984. It has been restored for nearly 30 years… The vehicle has only 600 km on the counter since its restoration was completed. So the Porsche is in perfect condition!

The engine is a 1500cc Flat 4 Carrera, with a 5-speed Porsche manual transmission, a Hirth crankshaft, an original VDM steering wheel, five original 15-inch riveted wheels and a racing fuel tank. The Porsche will also be delivered with the original vehicle documentation with notes from Herbert Kaes, Porsche’s race director, and Porsche AG.
